Guardian of The Legacy - Shifu Kahar

In 1991, at the age of 17, Kahar began his Wing Choon journey under Grandmaster Yip Fok Choy, while still in Form 5. In a conservative era where traditional Chinese martial arts were rarely opened to non-Chinese, Grandmaster Yip stood out with an open heart—welcoming Kahar, a young Malay man, to learn this prestigious art.

Kahar’s early training was rigorous and rooted in the traditional methods. For the first three months, he was instructed to stand in the Er Zi Qian Yang Ma (二字钳羊马) stance for two hours straight each session, followed by another three months of practicing Zi Wu Ma (子午马)—turning left and right. These seemingly simple yet intense foundations forged Kahar’s strength, balance, and internal structure, earning him a fearsome reputation in the push-hand community as an “Unmovable Giant Rock.”

After nine years of diligent study, Kahar went to the United Kingdom for further studies. There, he joined a full-contact underground fight club that included seasoned fighters: A Karate master, a Judo champion, a nightclub bouncer, and even an Army Commando. It was in this crucible that Kahar proved the practicality of Yip Kin Wing Choon. He found it highly effective in real combat, building unshakable confidence in applying the art under pressure and in unpredictable conditions.

Returning to Malaysia, eager to showcase his hard-earned skills, Kahar challenged Grandmaster Yip. But what awaited him was a humbling experience—he was effortlessly thrown upside down by the Grandmaster. This moment marked a turning point. Kahar realized he had only scratched the surface of the art. From then on, he embarked on a deeper path—one that went beyond being a formidable fighter—towards true kung fu mastery.

In 2014, after more than two decades of unwavering dedication and service in teaching junior students, Grandmaster Yip officially bestowed upon Kahar the title of Shifu (师父)—acknowledging him as a true inheritor of the lineage.

In 2010, Lucian Lim, in search of authentic kung fu, encountered Shifu Kahar at Lara Place Learning Center. Guided by destiny, Shifu Kahar demonstrated blindfolded Chi Sau (黐手) to Lucian on his very first class—an experience so powerful that Lucian committed to the art and has followed the path ever since.

Following the passing of Grandmaster Yip in 2019, Shifu Kahar, together with Instructor Lucian, now continues to preserve and pass on the legacy of Yip Kin Wing Choon. Teaching in Taman Melawati and Puchong Dojo, their mission is clear: to honor their Master’s teachings and ensure the art lives on—for the next 1,000 years and beyond.
